We are proud to announce a new initiative to bring together youth, neighbours, and businesses to create a positive impact this summer! Urban Roots is an urban agriculture project designed to foster community connectivity while sharing knowledge of gardening and growth, sustainability, and food security with youth facing difficult realities. A garden of community!
Using a vacant City of Edmonton lot on the corner of 93 Street and 82 Avenue, the Urban Roots garden will feature floral, fruit, and vegetable gardens and areas for reflection, inspiration, and music. Youth from YESS along with mentors from the community will tend to the gardens, harvest its product, and enjoy a wealth of benefits including engagement in the community, exercise, mental and emotional well-being, and social interaction.
What can you do in the garden?
Garden! The mailboxes at the garden have tools, sunscreen, and first aid kits. Feel free to pull weeds, pick flowers, harvest tomatoes, or water the plants!
Play music! The instruments in the garden are open to everyone–or you can bring your own for a little outdoor jam session!
Hold a class! Host your book club, your knitting circle, your yoga class–anything you want.
Host an event! Have your next party, family dinner, or even small weddings in the garden!
Enjoy quiet time! Come to the garden to meditate, read, write, journal, and take a quiet moments for yourself.
