From The Chvrch of John:
Chances are if you’re a music lover, you are aware that the sounds we love today come from black culture. House, Techno, Blues, Rock n’ Roll, Jazz – we could not imagine a world without what these pioneers created.
In light of recent events, we must not only acknowledge the origin of the music we love dearly today, but we should also stand up to the racial injustice that is occurring in the US, and within our own communities.
On July 10th and 11th some of the best DJs in Edmonton will come together in a special streaming event live from The Chvrch of John to raise money for The Come Up YEG and YESS, two essential non-profit groups that empower youth in our city.
The Come Up YEG:
A group that encourages individual and collective empowerment from within African/Caribbean communities. Mainly working with youth, The Come Up YEG supports black artists, and promotes leadership and mentorship within their communities. They also offer positive workshops for black youth.
Youth Empowerment & Support Services (YESS):
Based in Edmonton, YESS provides immediate and low-barrier shelter, temporary housing, and individualized wraparound support for youth ages 15-24.
The focus on working collaboratively with our youth-supporting partners on prevention and diversion out of homelessness. Ultimately, they aim to walk beside traumatized youth as they heal through relationships.
